Simon Liddiment frequently takes some form
of ‘given’ as
a starting point for his work. The profile of his own head, a postcard,
the Union Jack, and a toilet roll have all provided recent springboards.
His working process overlays these universal knowns with diverse
production methods to create new objects that explore our relationships
with such identities. These interactions are further investigated
through his manipulation of language, words and semiotics, and
their use in explaining the world.
Liddiment’s response to Kaavous-Bhoyroo’s
invitation has been to approach the commissioning of an editioned
multiple as akin to the production of a licensed souvenir. In
explicitly fulfilling this merchandising expectation we are presented
with the most archetypal and ubiquitous of formats, the tea towel.
The tea towel bears an example of typographic
play reminiscent in attitude to some of his earlier text/language
based pieces – ‘NEO’ 2008
and ‘Fallow’ 2005 – an attitude that humorously
fulfils the ‘instructional’ within existing formats.
Read in the manner of a simple rebus, “form over content”,
is a utilitarian phrase that both completes the product’s
logic, describing its construction from within, while functioning
as the forced reconciliation of a clichéd hierarchy.
